You see a typical daytime show wherein the host prods a woman about her romantic attachment to her pen pal in jail. She asks several questions to gain more details on their love affair but the questions are almost always vaguely answered like "He is nice to Me." or "I can't wait to receive his letters." and in a way that has no obvious purpose. This may not be intellectually stimulating and may compel you to change the channel but if you take a more observant look at her speech patterns will realize that it reveals problems in her thinking.

Researchers of The School of Medicine found out that individuals with psychiatric disorders have very distinguishable language patterns in which they meander through conversations without a main point and uses vague words. This provides direct evidence that teary-eyed guests in talk shows can have imbalances in their brain, specifically somatization disorder or hysteria and antisocial personality disorder.

Most individuals with somatization disorder are women and they tend to countless complaints about their bodily functions such as vomiting and paralysis yet these cannot be linked to any physical illness. On the other hand, individuals with antisocial personality disorder resorts to lying, stealing and vandalism during their childhood years and progess to more serious crimes.

The similarity between the two is that they do not encourage good decisions in friends, partners and lifestyle. These disorders afflict 3% of the population. Unfortunately, they have the tendency to run in families and often, women with somatization disorder
have men diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder.

A research compared the results acquired from 15 men and women with both disorders against 10 men and women of the same age and backgrounds. The researchers conversed with the subjects about trivial matters such as the news or the weather. "Vague points" were given to subjects who say things like "Dave is nice." The researchers also noted if the subject is a meanderer wherein he talks about other things first before answering the question.

The women in the study have significant differences in their speech patterns. Those with somatization or antisocial personality disorder used either vague words or meandering language. Those with both disorders have more pronounced speech patterns. Researchers found very little differences in the men's speech pattern although they show strong signs of antisocial personality disorder. Two of them were in fact formally diagnosed.

It has long been established that imbalances in the brain causes language alteration. For example, people with schizophrenia tend to have jumbled speech otherwise known as "word salad".   It was concluded that vague, wandering speech indicates malfunctions in the brain which was coined as "nonpsychotic thought disorder", describing the speech patterns of people with somatization disorder and antisocial personality disorder. This marked the first time that unusual thought processes were formally linked to nonpsychotic psychiatric disorders.

Researchers hope that in recognizing distinct speech patterns will assist in diagnosing somatization and personality disorders as many individuals are diagnosed wrong and labeled as psychotic while others are not diagnosed at all.
